VICTORY: A Global Commitment to 30×30!
Global leaders finalized negotiations at the United Nations Biodiversity Summit (COP15) in the early morning hours on December 19, 2022.
The historic agreement includes a commitment to conserve 30% of our lands, waters, and ocean by 2030 (30×30) by protecting nature while respecting indigenous and traditional territories. This Guardian article summarizes the main points.
The global commitment to 30×30 was long-awaited and supported by ocean conservationists and biodiversity supporters, including youth leaders and organizations, zoos, aquariums, and museums from around the globe.
Thank you to the entire World Ocean Day community and to everyone who played a role in the collective and collaborative efforts to call on our nations’ leaders to commit to 30×30, which helped make this global commitment a reality!
By incorporating actionable resources, and working in collaboration with the Campaign for Nature for the last several years, The Ocean Project catalyzed the collective efforts of World Ocean Day event organizers and helped to generate over 70,000 individual signatures from 120+ countries and an endorsement of support from 1,100+ organizations in support of 30×30.
Protecting our ocean is integral to stabilizing our climate and, now, with an ambitious goal, plans for funding, and ongoing monitoring of the progress toward the 30×30 commitment, we can work together to protect our one shared blue planet.
In the months and years to come, The Ocean Project will be encouraging and supporting World Ocean Day celebrators and event coordinators to continue advocating for the implementation of policies and programs that are necessary to reach the 30×30 goal. It’s time to celebrate now, and then continue to work together to make sure that our nations’ leaders follow through on their commitments!
For now, we invite you to celebrate this historic milestone by spreading the word to your networks, family, and friends.
