National Teachers Colleges Uganda wins Architizer award
Uganda’s National Teachers Colleges project by Oubuntu-DASUDA and bkvv architects has just won the Public Award from the Architizer A+ Awards 2022. The popular choice winner in the Architecture for Good category, National Teachers College, or NTC Uganda project, is a large campus renovation at two locations near Kaliro and Mubende, Uganda.

The project serves 2,000 students and involves 24 renovated buildings and eight new ones. These buildings include student and teacher housing, classrooms, kitchens and sports facilities, food production facilities, and sustainable energy and waste recycling systems.

NTC is also part of a national program aiming to improve education in Uganda. It’s a joint venture between the architects for the Ministry of Education and Sports in Uganda and the Belgium Development Agency. Meanwhile, the project is being funded by the Belgian government.

Further, the project won an Architizer award out of 5,000 entries from more than 100 countries. The voting public cast over 400,000 votes on judge-nominated finalists for each award category. In detail, the Architecture for Good category promotes projects and architects that address crises while working together with communities.
Construction on the NTC project was also just completed. The buildings were handed over to the teachers and students in December of 2021.
Moreover, the campus features indoor and outdoor spaces for teachers and students. The design then focuses on enhancing the green environment through local safeguards for water protection and protecting biodiversity around the campus.
The buildings used local materials like bamboo and earthen bricks for a simple construction that promoted local involvement in the construction. In addition, the buildings also optimize natural lighting and ventilation as well as passive cooling, which results in relatively cool indoor temperatures. The systems are low-cost to run because they don’t involve air conditioning.
The Minister of State and Ambassador of Belgium signed the Manifesto for Climate Responsive Design during the inauguration ceremony, with NTC being the first project in Uganda acknowledged as an example of best practices. The project will serve as a reference point for institutional developments in Uganda in the future.
