“Back to the Future” DeLorean returns with Alpha5 EV

DeLorean makes a sustainable reentry into the future in 2022 with the Alpha5. It’s an EV designed to look like an updated version of the gullwing DMC-12 coupe that took Marty McFly into the distant 2000s.

The rebooted DeLorean Motor Company created its electric sports car to hit 60 miles per hour in three seconds. That is high-end sportscar or supercar speeds, and it might be just enough to push this company into the future. DeLorean was a rebel with a colorful past, and unique sports car designs were utterly impractical on paper and on the road. Maybe that’s why we love DeLoreans as a culture: clearly they weren’t designed by accountants.

The new DeLorean Alpha5 has a powerful and sustainable battery pack. The pack is larger than 100 kilowatt-hours and offers a driving range of 300 miles, which is quite a lot for a power-hungry electric sports car. Additionally, the Alpha5 only has 0.23 coefficient of drag, making it slippery enough to slide through time. In place of the chunky sharp exterior lines of the original, the new Alpha5 DeLorean comes with horizontal LED lighting with a super wraparound dashboard inside the cockpit. The car has a large touch screen a la Tesla in the center console along with other simplified controls.

The inside features four seats

Furthermore, the car is two doors with alleged seating for four, but think sports car rear seats that only fit your tiniest friends in an emergency. While the original DeLorean was stainless steel, the new Alpha5 has a carbon fiber tub design with all-new chassis. The new version is also billed as a driver’s car, which shouldn’t be hard to improve on the original, which was more for looks. Plus, a lot has changed in drive quality in sports cars since the 1970s, when the original DMC-12 came out.

A launch edition of the Alpha5 will debut at the Concours D’Elegance in August. This will be an exciting debut because the DeLorean Motor Company indicated that the Alpha5 is just the first of an entire line of all-electric sustainable EV sports cars. DeLorean couldn’t wait for the future, so they brought it back to us.
