World Environment Day calls for collective action

World Environment Day 2022 was held in Sweden yesterday under the theme “Only One Earth.” Coming at a time when the world is grappling with the effects of climate change, the day served as a reminder that we only have one place to live. The event was used to rally policymakers, individuals, and businesses to find a way of dealing with environmental issues in order to protect the planet.

Over 150 nations took part in marking the world’s largest Environment Day. With millions of people involved, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) facilitated over 5,721 events across the globe.

“The science is clear and time is running out – we must go from harming our planet to healing it. In the universe are billions of galaxies. In our galaxy are billions of planets. But there is #OnlyOneEarth. Let’s all take care of it,” UNEP said in a Twitter post.

This year’s World Environment Day fell on the same day as the 57th anniversary of the 1972 United Nations (UN) Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden. The conference resulted in the Stockholm Declaration, which calls upon humanity to protect the environment for present and future generations. The declaration recognized humans and the environment as interdependent players. As a result, it required human cooperation to sustain nature.

In a Twitter statement UNEP said that the slogan #OnlyOneEarth calls for “Collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet.”

According to the UN, progress towards containing climate change has been slow, despite several treaties being signed. The agency says that direct involvement of all society members is necessary if progress is to be made.

The world has been grappling with global warming, one of the devastating effects of poor environmental management. According to the UN, there is a 50% chance that global warming will exceed the 1.5 degrees C. To avoid this, annual greenhouse gas emissions must be cut by at least half by the year 2030. Otherwise, global warming will result in devastating effects that will affect at least 40% of the world population and lead to massive losses of life.
