Large light display brings eco-action to the Marina Bay
i Light Singapore, Asia’s leading sustainable light festival, returns to light up Marina Bay from June 3 to 26, 2022. It will feature 20 light art installations, all aimed at sparking conversations around sustainable actions and protecting the environment. The event is organized by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and presented by DBS.

The theme for the 2022 event is Spark of Light and represents work of artists from 14 countries. One such exhibit is dubbed MotherEarth ClimateChange Data Sculpture by Turkish new media studio Ouchhh. In partnership with Marina Bay Sands, MotherEarth is a projection displaying environmental data on the side of the ArtScience Museum with the goal to draw attention to climate change issues.

Highlighting the effect of ocean pollution on marine life is Plastic Whale. Created by Craig Neo, Feng Qiao, Liao Qingshuang and Li Jianwen, it features an inflatable whale filled with recyclable plastic bottles and scraps, struggling to breathe.

Another marine-themed display is presented by Aleksandra Stratimirovic and Leonel Kaplan. It depicts an undersea set with giant lanterns made of discarded fishing nets. The accompanying ominous sounds set the tone, drawing attention to the challenges for marine animals.
Wildlife is otherwise represented in Firefly Field by Studio Toer from the Netherlands. It features 500 blinking lights that illuminate the bioluminescence of fireflies at night.
For a digital engagement, Light Canvas by the local artist group Trial & Error presents the opportunity for guests to create their own artworks using the flashlight on mobile phones.
Furthermore, i Light Singapore showcases problems of water pollution, such as toxic dyes and untreated sewage. The event expresses the urgency of collapsing icebergs due to the effects of climate change and even puts a spotlight on food waste. In addition, the festival will offer educational programs and activities, as well as food vendors and an inflatable play zone for the kids.
