Earth Action: Take Action for Earth Day

Today, April 22, is the 52nd annual Earth Day. For the original Earth Day in 1970, an amazing 10% of the U.S. population took to the streets to protest environmental degradation. That powerful moment in environmental history grew into a movement. In 1990, the Earth Day Network expanded internationally to become a global force for sustainability. They recently changed their name to EarthDay.org.

Today, a billion people around the world march and rally and participate in projects to clean up the environment on Earth Day. Those actions don’t stop on April 23. Every day of the year, people are investing their time and energy into developing more sustainable lifestyles for a green economy. For individuals within the movement, however, making sustainable changes every single day might not be possible. But weekly changes are feasible for most of us. In honor of the 52 years that Earth Day has been inspiring action, this year Earth911 is presenting 52 Acts for the Earth.

52 Acts for the Earth

Each week from Earth Day 2022 to Earth Day 2023, we will share an action you can take to invest in the Earth and make your own life more sustainable. Each year, EarthDay.org chooses a theme. This year, EarthDay.org is encouraging everyone to invest in the planet to create a green economy. We will include many ideas for ways you can invest your time to support EarthDay.org’s major campaigns:

But we will also include small, simple changes that will help you reduce waste in your household and shrink the carbon footprint of your life, work, and shopping over the course of the coming year.

We’ll start by celebrating Earth Day. Don’t worry if you haven’t already made Earth Day plans. Since EarthDay is on a Friday this year, there are lots of events scheduled this weekend that you can join.
